I am a proud Latina born and raised in New York to a single Dominican mother who showed me the importance of never losing hope. As many may know, growing up in a Dominican culture often makes it difficult when cultural norms are broken. This allowed me to understand the importance of finding my path in life and establishing a balance between cultural norms and my God-given identity.
During my childhood, I witnessed domestic violence, which led to having an emotionally and physically absent father. This impacted my ability to make healthy choices as a young adult. My life began to change at 16, after attending a Catholic Youth Retreat that inspired me to start my healing journey. The retreat encouraged and empowered me to address the voids in my life and to seek to become whole emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
There is a trendy saying; “Every therapist has a story that led them to desire to help others.” My story began during my early childhood, which led me to pursue a Master of Science in Human Services with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. This allowed me to gain 10+ years of experience in human services as a Social Worker and Investigator for the Department of Children and Families. I have worked with families challenged in various areas, including domestic and intimate partner violence, and as a Victim's Advocate for Family Relations through the Court-Based Services program with Prudence Crandall Center, Inc.
My journey with DCF also included supporting parents in overcoming obstacles that became barriers to providing adequate parenting. I was inspired by this career path to becoming an adoptive parent, which gives me a greater understanding and empathy needed to be entirely present for a child during a difficult adjustment.
In addition to my work with DCF, my role as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor has allowed me to understand how mental health can impact success with employment. As a Trauma-informed therapist, I believe a holistic approach to counseling can bring tremendous value to mental health treatment. Therefore, I utilize various therapeutic techniques, including incorporating Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and others that best meet the individual’s needs.
My holistic counseling approach also offers individuals a space to incorporate faith in their therapeutic and healing journey using Faith-Based Counseling.
